Go for PURPLE

Some people think sweet potatoes are a sweet variety of white potatoes; they are not! They actually belong to a different food group completely; and surprisingly they offer amazing health benefits.

Sweet potatoes are rich in antioxidants, vitamins such as A, B6, C; in minerals such as potassium, manganese, and in fibre.

- Immune health support/ protection against cancer; rich in antioxidants especially in anthocyanins, purple variety richer; protection against heavy metals and oxidative damage, again purple better
- Eye/brain health; anti-inflammatory benefits, rich in phytonutrients, vit A, again purple better
- Gut health; rich in soluble and insoluble fibres
- Blood sugar balance; amazing benefit since they are so sweet; their glycemic index (GI) is low to moderate, again purple lower; they increase the protein hormone adiponectin which help regulate glucose levels and fatty acid breakdown

In Chinese Medicine, sweet potatoes are seen as cooling, strengthening Qi, Yin and spleen-pancreas; removing toxins. Just make sure not to overeat them as they may cause indigestion and bloating.

Best to store them in a dry cool place and make sure not to bake/roast/fry them so as not to sky rocket their GI. Also moderation is key. In short, purple variety is richer in all the nutrients and they are just YUMMY, they taste like chestnuts..
l love them!

After many years of my friends pushing me to do so, I’ve finally decided to share the fruits of my 30+ years of health and wellness knowledge.

Following a Ph.D in Economics I had a complete career change and studied Traditional Chinese Medicine, graduating as an Acupuncturist over 25 years ago. Since then I have continued to study - completing degrees in Chinese Herbs and Naturopathic Nutrition and becoming a Reiki Healer.

I continue to treat patients and am an avid reader of all things health. This page aims to provide a consolidated account of my past and continued learnings.

I hope you enjoy it and that it helps you take control of your health and better understand your body and mind.
