Does my Fertility Fall off a Cliff at 35?
Fertility does not fall of a cliff !
After 37 we see a faster decline in genetically competent eggs than in our 20s.
We lose eggs constantly from when we are born. As egg stocks dwindle we go into menopause. Eggs that are in the vault are dormant until they are recruited. This sleeping state is fine for a while, but as we age, our monthly recruited eggs have been sleeping so long that they start to make more mistakes - becoming what is called genetically incompetent eggs.
So, as we get older more of our eggs are genetically incompetent
- At 35 its expected that 60% of ovulating eggs are still genetically competent
- 37 - 50%
- 38 - 40%
- 39 - 30%
- 40 - 25%
- 41 - 15%
- 42 - 10%
As we age, we have more genetically incompetent eggs, and so you may struggle to fall pregnant, or the egg might still be fertilised, but you may have a higher risk of a miscarriage or affected pregnancy than you do in your 20s.
