PCOS or just Cysts on your Ovaries?

Were you diagnosed with PCOS via ultrasound only, or as a young teen or just after coming off the oral contraceptive pill?

Listen to our instagram reels on this to hear why you might not actually have PCOS.

To be diagnosed with PCOS you need 2 out of 3 of the following Rotterdam 2003 criteria & have had any other conditions ruled out that might be causing them:

1. Irregular periods (8 or less periods a year or cycles longer than 35 days or less than 21)

2. High levels of ‘male hormones’ (androgens) like tesosterone - tested via blood test or symptoms like male pattern hair growth / acne

3. Cysts on your ovaries - seen via ultrasound (20 or more follicles)

Easy Hack to Balance your Hormones

If you have any sort of hormonal imbalance - fatigue, acne, irregular periods, weight gain/loss etc. Then one of the easiest ways to balance them is to stabilise your blood sugar!

And how best to do that? Have breakfast every day, preferably one that’s hot, cooked, containing protein (eggs, meat, nuts, seeds, chickpeas/hummus, salmon etc) and healthy fats (avocados, hummus, olives, olive oil, nuts, seeds)

Intermittent fasting can have huge benefits, but, a lot of the research is done on males with more stable hormones. If you have hormonal imbalance in any way then intermittent fasting probably isn’t for you!

3 Kitchen tips to improve your health

Swipe to elevate your kitchen game! 🚀🌿 Here are 3 easy swaps for a healthier you:

1. **Bye, Vegetable Oil! 👋** Switch to organic, extra virgin olive oil. Unlike vegetable oils, which can contain harmful trans fats and degrade at high temperatures, olive oil is rich in antioxidants and healthy monounsaturated fats. Store it in a dark glass jar, tightly close the lid after use, and keep it away from heat and sunlight. Your taste buds (and body) will thank you! 🌞🍈

2. **Ditch Table Salt! 🧂❌** Opt for Himalayan or sea salt. Table salt is often heavily processed and stripped of minerals, while Himalayan and sea salts retain natural minerals like magnesium and potassium that support overall health. 🌊🏔️

3. **Say No to Plastic! 🚫** Upgrade to wooden or stainless steel chopping boards and utensils. Plastic can harbor bacteria and release harmful chemicals into your food, especially when cut or heated. Wood and stainless steel are naturally antibacterial and more durable. 🌍✨

5 Meals I’d eat on repeat for Breast Cancer, Endometriosis…

Here are 5 meals I’d eat on repeat for oestrogen-dominant conditions like breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer, endometriosis, & fibroids:

1. Coconut Chia & Flax Overnight Oats🌿✨
Topped with berries and nut butter, this meal is packed with phytoestrogenic flax seeds, fibre, and healthy fats to detox bad oestrogen and boost digestion. Berries add antioxidants, nut butter provides protein, and coconut milk is a protein rich, delicious dairy-free alternative (I would avoid dairy with any hormonal conditions!). Oats are calming and rich in nutrients like magnesium and B vitamins, essential for energy and stress management.

2. Broccoli Sprout Salad🥗💚
With rocket, red peppers, chickpeas, radish, lettuce, and kale, this salad features brassica veggies, which are amazing oestrogen detoxers. Broccoli sprouts are 200x more powerful at detoxing oestrogen! Chickpeas add protein and fibre, while red peppers give a big vitamin C boost.

3. Red Lentil Daal with Brown Rice🍛🌾
Red lentils are phytoestrogens rich in fibre and protein, and brown rice adds magnesium and fibre, helping detox oestrogen effectively. This meal is also packed with iron and B vitamins, supporting overall health.

4. Miso Glazed Salmon with Brown Rice, Broccoli & Cauliflower🐟🥦
Opt for organic, wild salmon for the best omega-3s, essential for reducing inflammation. Miso is both a probiotic and a phytoestrogenic food, aiding in gut health and oestrogen balance. The fibre from brown rice and broccoli further supports detoxification.

5. Chickpea, Sweet Potato, Coconut, Turmeric & Ginger Curry🌈🍠
This colourful curry is loaded with anti-inflammatory ingredients like ginger and turmeric, and antioxidant-rich foods like sweet potato. It’s a flavourful way to support oestrogen detoxification and overall wellness.

**Bonus Tips:** Avoid plastic Tupperware, foil, and vegetable oils; stick to organic extra virgin olive oil!

Thin Endometrial Lining

Are you worried about the thickness of your endometrial lining?

The endometrial lining is the middle layer of the lining of the uterus, it is this layer that sheds as blood in the form of a period in our menstrual cycle.

Newer research on 96000 participants that had an embryo transfer in IVF, shows the thickness needs to be a minimum of 6mm with increasing thickness correlated with increasing live birth rates. Below 6mm there is a drop off in live birth rates with a plateau after 7-10mm for frozen embryo transfers and 7-12mm for fresh transfers. Studies show you typically need a less thick lining for success with a frozen cycle compared to a fresh transfer.

We only have data about thickness of the endometrial lining from IVF as there are no scans done ‘in the wild’ for us to see how people conceive naturally!

More important than thickness, is a trilaminar appearance - seeing 3 parallel layers of the endometrial lining!

One of the best ways to increase the thickness of your lining is with acupuncture! If you are undergoing IVF or worried you have a thin lining, then book a consultation with us now.

Nausea in Pregnancy / Morning Sickness

Morning sickness affects only 14% of women exclusively in the morning. Most get constantly nausea throughout the day.

The most important thing to do is manage your blood sugar, which is at its lowest first thing in the morning after fasting overnight. Keeping snacks right by your bed and having a small amount before bed and immediately first thing in the morning will help keep nausea at bay. Eat small amounts regularly even if you are not hungry. I recommend @amisaorganic buckwheat crackers which are neutral in taste, a bit salty and with some protein in. They are great to have on you at all times.

Get acupuncture! It really really does work for a lot of women, even 1 session may be enough to completely get rid of nausea in pregnancy. It’s completely safe and can help target any other ailments that may have cropped up in the pregnancy like anxiety or constipation.

Stay. Hydrated!! The amniotic fluid surrounding the baby is replaced every 3 hours - you have to drink far more water than you might think with this increased demand. Being dehydrated worsens nausea.

Ginger has been shown to help some women, sipping ginger tea throughout the day may ease symptoms.

Make sure to take your prenatal vitamin with food too, it may also be worth swapping brand as sometimes the supplement itself can worsen sickness.

B6 supplements may also help but please, as always, discuss taking any supplements with your healthcare provider.

Does my Fertility Fall off a Cliff at 35?

Fertility does not fall of a cliff !

After 37 we see a faster decline in genetically competent eggs than in our 20s.

We lose eggs constantly from when we are born. As egg stocks dwindle we go into menopause. Eggs that are in the vault are dormant until they are recruited. This sleeping state is fine for a while, but as we age, our monthly recruited eggs have been sleeping so long that they start to make more mistakes - becoming what is called genetically incompetent eggs.

So, as we get older more of our eggs are genetically incompetent

- At 35 its expected that 60% of ovulating eggs are still genetically competent

- 37 - 50%

- 38 - 40%

- 39 - 30%

- 40 - 25%

- 41 - 15%

- 42 - 10%

As we age, we have more genetically incompetent eggs, and so you may struggle to fall pregnant, or the egg might still be fertilised, but you may have a higher risk of a miscarriage or affected pregnancy than you do in your 20s.

5 Benefits of Facial Cosmetic Acupuncture

Facial Cosmetic Acupuncture Benefits:

1. FCA decreases the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes and sagging, and makes the skin more firm and smooth.

2. FCA balances collagen and elastin, improves qi (energy) and blood circulation in the face.

3. FCA increases microcirculation, lymphatic drainage, muscle tone to a more ‘youthful’ state and facial elasticity.

4. FCA builds on the fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM, acupuncture. It is a holistic practice which looks at the whole body and is able to benefit the whole person as part of a localised cosmetic treatmeint. This increases the benefits and leads to longer lasting results. This is a key way that FCA differentiates itself from other cosmetic treatments available

5. FCA also increases oil and water content on the face, decreasing dryness of the skin which is associated with wrinkle formation.

We use detailed TCM facial diagnosis and treat not only the blemish or wrinkle specified but also the underlying organ pathology. Each wrinkle is treated both locally and distally (with points on the body) to target not just the wrinkle but also its underlying organ disharmony.

5 Tips to manage IVF

Are you undergoing IVF? Here are my top 5 tips to help you through

1. hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. If you are dehydrated the side effects of the medications will be much worse. Most get constipated during IVF & being hydrated helps keep your bowels moving. We detox hormones through our stools, if they are stuck, the hormones recirculate and everything feels a lot worse - I love @ancientandbrave electrolytes to be taken daily

2. Make sure you have a strong support system, friends, family or whatever works for you (talking therapy, acupuncture, reflexology, etc). Try not to share specific dates/ milestones to avoid pressure on you to share information in real time.

3. Get. Acupuncture!! The research shows it improves chances of a live birth by 32%. Acupuncture can also help calm you, improve your sleep, digestion, medication side effects (insomnia, night sweats etc) and so much more.

4. Eat breakfast, every day. In every meal include good sources of protein, healthy fats, complex carbs, fiber (especially for constipation) & veggies. This balances your blood sugar & in turn balances your sex hormones. Additionally include some liver detox support foods: nettle, dandelion, turmeric, citrus and green tea.

5. Take daily walks in nature, keeping your body moving is so important. Walking is allowed throughout IVF and being in nature is beneficial for both the body & the mind. Particularly if you get exposure to natural light first thing in the morning - This balances cortisol, & impacts melatonin, helping you sleep and boosting your fertility.

Bloated all the time and don’t know why?

Feeling bloated all the time and can’t figure out why? Low stomach acid might be the cause. 🚨 Symptoms include:

- Bloating

- Belching

- Flatulence 1-2 hours after meals, especially after high fat or protein meals.

- Abdominal pain/cramping after eating.

- Foul-smelling/floating stools.

Check out our last reel for how to test your levels of stomach acid easily at home!

Here’s how to naturally boost your stomach acid:

1. Apple cider vinegar(with the mother/unpasteurised) mixed with a little water drunk just before each meal.

2. Eat bitters 15-20 mins before a meal to stimulate HCl release. Examples: dandelion (stimulates movement through the digestive tract, is a diuretic and supports the liver) and goldenseal. Bitter tasting foods like fennel, rocket, chicory, artichoke, and watercress are also great.

3. Consume zinc (nuts, seeds, pumpkin seeds, eggs, oysters, fish, meat) and vitamin B6 foods (whole grains, sunflower seeds, legumes, walnuts, green veg, carrots, potatoes, avocado, fish) needed to make stomach acid

4. Avoid over-eating, eat mindfully, and avoid processed food.

5. Eat fermented foods like sauerkraut, kombucha, coconut kefir, and miso soup.

6. Add Himalayan/sea salt to food as this provides the chloride for HCl production, and a little cayenne pepper with food.

7. Avoid ice in drinks and consume room temperature or hot drinks only.

8. Try supplementation of digestive enzymes and/or betaine hydrochloride (HCl) as a last resort (under professional guidance). I love the ones from @pureencapsulations

And if all else fails here are some pretty swans and their babies in the rain!

Doing the viral at home stomach acid test

Do you experience bloating, indigestion, or a heavy feeling after meals? These could be symptoms of low stomach acid. Try the baking soda test at home to get a quick idea. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink it on an empty stomach. Time how long it takes to burp. If it takes longer than 3 minutes, you might have low stomach acid.

⚠️ Remember, this test is not foolproof. If you’re concerned about your stomach acid levels, it’s important to get tested properly by your doctor.

Follow and like for more health tips, and check out our next reel for ways to naturally increase stomach acid!

A cold water swim for your swimmers

Men, boost your sperm health with a cold water swim. 🏊‍♂️

Testicles naturally hang lower to stay around 2°C cooler than the body, vital for healthy sperm production.

High temperatures can damage sperm and lower fertility, so avoid saunas and steam rooms if you’re trying to conceive. Instead, cold water swimming can help keep your swimmers at the optimal temperature. 🌊❄️

Though traditional Chinese medicine doesn’t advocate for cold water plunging, I believe that going in the sea when you can is always beneficial for your health. Studies show cooler environments support better sperm count and motility.

6 Nutrition tips for ADHD

6 Nutrition Tips for Managing ADHD from a nutritionist🌟

1. Omega 3: These anti-inflammatories improve ADHD symptoms. Supplement ( I love @barebiology ) and eat oily fish like salmon and mackerel twice a week. Wild salmon is best for high Omega 3 content. 🐟

2. Avoid Stimulants & Processed Foods: Caffeine, alcohol, and over 20 artificial additives/preservatives (E102, E104, E110, etc.) can worsen ADHD. Found in items like soft drinks, jams, and margarine. Opt for whole foods instead! 🍎

3. Regulate Blood Sugar: Poor control exacerbates ADHD. Include complex carbs, proteins, healthy fats, fiber, and veggies in every meal. A savory, high-protein breakfast helps stabilise blood sugar levels. 🍳

4. Vitamin D: Low levels are common in ADHD. Supplementing can improve attention and reduce hyperactivity. Get your levels checked and supplement if needed. 🌞 in the UK the NHS recommends supplementing during the winter months.

5. Magnesium: Found in leafy greens, seeds, dark chocolate, quinoa, and brown rice. Magnesium aids brain activity and attention. Brown rice also contains lecithin which enhances brain function. 🥬

6. Probiotics & Prebiotics: Consumption of prebiotic fiber and probiotic foods like sauerkraut, miso, and kimchi have been linked to improvements in ADHD symptoms. Probiotic supplementation with Lactobacillus acidophilus can be beneficial (always consult a professional before supplementing!) 🥒

**Bonus**: Rosemary enhances focus, concentration, and memory. It’s also anti-inflammatory and supports heart health, which can be beneficial given the cardiac side effects of some ADHD medications. 🌿

6 Tips for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a hormonal cancer and lifestyle and nutrition changes can have a huge impact!

1. Include phytoestrogens like lentils, tempeh, miso, and chickpeas in the diet. flax seeds get a special mention, add 3 tbsp daily to lower prostate cancer cell proliferation.

2. Increase fiber and stay hydrated to boost detoxification and regulate bowel movements, preventing bad oestrogen recirculation.

3. Eat organic where possible and avoid pesticides. Avoid endocrine disruptors in plastic packaging, especially avoid heating food in plastic containers or drinking water from plastic bottles left in the sun.

4. Skip dairy and swap milk for almond milk. Lab studies show almond milk can suppress cancer cell growth, while cow’s milk speeds it up.

5. Cut out eggs; their choline content can drive prostate cancer growth and avoid meat, especially poultry which has been shown to increase prostate cancer growth

6. Eat 3+ handfuls of cruciferous veggies daily (broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower).

And a bonus… Drink nettle tea for its anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effects, especially beneficial for prostate health.
